Art Collection: Tale of the Bamboo Cutter - Lament of Princess Kaguya

"Tsuki wo Mite Naku Kaguyahime" (Princess Kaguya cries while watching the moon).from "Taketori Monogatari" (The Tale of Bamboo Cutter). It is a Japanese folk lore about an old bamboo cutter who found a large bamboo which was shining. He became curious and cut it. There was a small girl there. Since the bamboo cutter and his wife did not have any children, they named her, Kaguya, and raised her in at most care. She was actually a celestial being who was sent from the moon.Here, princess Kaguya is crying because the day, she has to return to the moon is near and she has to leave the beloved parents and the emperor.Masayuki Miyata was born with exceptional talent. Receiving no formal art training, his natural artistic ability led him into numerous awards and recognitions all over the world. Miyata used only one small blade to create his distinctive and graceful masterpieces of kiri-e (Japanese paper cuts). Even after his untimely passing in 1997, Miyata's work has continued to be in international demand.
